The Des Moines Science Fiction Society is a 501(c)(7) organization that seeks to work cooperatively with local individuals, organizations, and media to promote a variety of causes, including: scientific research, space exploration, literacy, and the arts.

Persons seeking information on science-, science fiction-, or fantasy-related topics, and organizations looking for additional resources (including volunteers) for similarly-related activities, are invited to contact any club officer or member. Officer e-mails and the general information phone number are given at left.

Who are we? Good question. The Des Moines Science Fiction Society, Ltd. (DMSFS) is a gathering of central Iowa science fiction and fantasy fans. Our interests include reading science fiction and fantasy (of course), watching science fiction and fantasy (of course), cutting-edge science and technology (of course), the space program (of... you get the idea), computers, F & SF gaming, alternative philosophies and faiths such as neo-paganism, cyberpunk, overdressing, underdressing, and many, many, many other cool things.

DMSFS is the sponsor of DemiCon, Des Moines' annual science fiction, fantasy and gaming convention. But we do other things, too. Like getting together twice a month to discuss science fiction stuff. Like throwing some bodacious parties (oops -- excuse me; I meant, "gathering for the semiannual DMSFS constitutional conventions"). Like volunteering to work the phones while Iowa Public Television pleads for money from Dr. Who and Red Dwarf fans. Like blowing potatoes out of large plastic pipes in the middle of Iowa cornfields. And most essentially like enjoying the company of others that share our interests.

Membership in the DMSFS is open to anyone and everyone (really -- it says so in our bylaws). There are no dues or membership fees. No goofy hazing rituals (well... maybe we'll "smooth" you, if you've never been smoothed before. But only if you want to). Our current members include high school students and senior citizens; doctors, landlords, business owners, computer geeks, and mimes; readers, writers, media fans, gamers, and people with real lives. In short, folks from all walks of life.

If you live in, or even just occasionally visit, the Des Moines area, then for heaven's sake, join us! Meetings are typically held on the second and fourth Fridays of each month. Exact details for the next meeting can be found on our calendar page. If you have any questions concerning DMSFS, please e-mail us at info@dmsfs.org, or call us at 515 / 830-1305.

Now that you know all this, you no longer have an excuse not to at least stop by once in a while to say, "Hi." We'd appreciate the opportunity to meet you and find out who you are.

A review copy of the current by-laws of the Des Moines Science Fiction Society can be accessed by clicking here. You should read them. Really. They're rather humorous in places.
